If I weren't bit by a fireant the other day, I would never have thought of writing about ants. Despite the cortisone cream, fireant bites itch, burn, and take quite a few days to heal.

Even if there is separateness among the ants, their existence is one complete element. An ant colony does not consist of tiny whole things linked together as in human societies; each ant is a part of the whole without being separate. The ants' oneness is in harmony with the forces of nature.

Imagine being without legs or arms and needing total care from the others in your youth. Well, that's an ant's life for you. Ants do not develop their legs until fully grown; they depend completely on the nurse-ants. When the baby ants develop, they get six legs with prominent elbows, or should we say knees, and off to work they go. The worker ants spent their internship of few days in caring for the queen and the young. After that, they graduate to harder and harder tasks, from digging and nest work to foraging food and defending the nest.

Most of these worker ants are females. Maybe the ant colonies, too, depend on womens volatile and high-strung view of things. Yet, there's a place for males in the commune also. The males act as drones and work with the queen to pad up the population. That must mean the females are the fallen soldiers who go out to face the world daily and possibly perish in the path of duty.

The queen--in the beginning of a colony--has quite a few jobs, but as the colony enlarges, her duties are delegated to others, and she becomes the mother of the commune who just lays eggs. Motherhood must have a very respectful and an almost divine throne, since ants appoint body guards to the queen and the body guards form a ring around her. That ring moves with her and expands or contracts according to the situation.

The eggs, or the ant-children, do not belong to the queen, but are the communal possession. As soon as the eggs are laid, they are carried to a separate room to be cared by attendants or nurses. These ants, though not a separate caste--being vigorous and efficient--are at the prime of their lives, and their care of the young, as witnessed by observers, is meticulously and very lovingly administered.

As soon as each young ant is out of the nursery, it gains responsibility and the spirit of the commune directs her to a chosen occupation. The young ant's role in life is not haphazard and directionless like the young of the human.

If we pause and think, we may understand that, from many angles, there is enlightenment to be gained from the ant colonies, but the most important point is, all ants of the colony act as one whole, making separateness an alien concept. Separateness causes discord in the harmony of life, allowing the ego to abhor or look down upon others.

Water pythons are a very hardy snake and take readily to captivity. They are usually eager feeders and will take to defrost rodents with little problem. Some wild caught or newly hatched specimens may need a little enticement with bird or reptile scenting methods, but this is not often an issue.

When purchasing a water python, expect the biggest. I have caught a wild specimen approximately 3 metres in length, far bigger than the average. Water pythons are not a lazy python. They will often travel a fair distance during a nights hunt, and have a higher metabolism than many other pythons. I recommend a vivarium L200cm x W60cm x H60cm for a large, 3m adult. A smaller 2m adult should have a minimum L120cm x W60cm x H60cm vivarium.

Snake enclosures can be made from a number of materials. Most commonly used is a melamine coated wood which covers all sides except the front, which has glass sliding doors. Aquariums can also be used for juvenile water pythons, although a specialist lid should be bought or made rather than the original aquarium lid. It is essential when thinking about what type of enclosure you use, you think about these 6 SSSHHH factors:

1) Safety Can the snake or owner injure itself from the enclosure or any appliances held within?
2) Secure Can the snake escape through any small hole or cavity?
3) Size Will the enclosure be appropriately sized?
4) Heating Is the enclosure able to regulate the temperature properly?
5) Humidity Will the enclosure last well in humid conditions? Is there enough ventilation for the moisture to escape?
6) Hygienic Will the enclosure build up a lot of bacteria in small cavities? Is it easy to clean?

Dcor

Dcor in your tank serves two purposes. First being extra cover for your snake and second, allowing for a more natural and pleasing appearance. When choosing dcor, think about the safety of the snake. Make sure that whatever you decide to use, it is securely fixed and that no rocks, wood or anything heavy can fall and possibly injure, or even kill the snake. You must also make sure that everything used is parasite free. If anything has been picked up from outside, or has originally come from outside, such as cork bark, you should either boil it, or place the item in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes. Freezing works for some parasites, however others have been known to survive months in freezing conditions. Some parasites found in English conditions last winters in minus temperatures, so it is not entirely effective.

Once all your dcor is parasite free, it is then safe to place inside your enclosure. As a general rule, if you can put pressure on an item to knock it down, a water python is certainly capable of doing so. When positioning rocks or heavy objects, make sure they are completely secure. If it is still uneasy, screw them or use superglue to fix them securely. If it is not possible, the rule is simple: Do not place the item in the vivarium!

If you decide to go for an extra large enclosure, you must provide plenty of cover and hiding areas. A hiding place can be anything from a large tupperware box with a hole cut out to a naturalistic piece of cork bark. There are many kinds of fake plants and dcor you can use which is both safe for the animal and pleasing to the eye. One thing you must consider when thinking about the size of the vivarium, is the bigger you go, the more hiding areas you must provide. I recommend at least one hiding place per 60cm in length of the enclosure.

NOTE: Never use sticky tape in an enclosure; this is an accident waiting to happen. Removing sticky tape from any snake is no easy task!

Substrate

Substrate is the medium which covers the floor of your enclosure. It really is a choice that you have to make as the owner of your snake. All options have their advantages and disadvantages. Explained below are the choices available to you in the order which I feel is best.

1) Newspaper This is disposable, it can be replaced easily and cheaply. It is the safest substrate and is virtually impossible for the substrate to be ingested by the snake. One disadvantage is the ink. If the newspaper becomes wet, the ink can be rubbed off onto the belly of the snake. This does not seem to cause the snake any harm, but should be washed off the snake if you see it. If the snake soils, it will mean a complete replacement of the substrate as soon as possible.

2) Aspen This is my favourite substrate, it is cheap, very easy for the snake to burrow in, lightweight and dirt free. Like any substrate, I suggest if you spot feces you take it out as soon as possible to minimize the risk of spreading diseases and parasites. When it comes to feeding your snake, aspen can stick to a wet rodent very easily. You must make sure the rodent is completely dry, and as a safety measure place it on a flat surface such as a rock. This will minimize the risk of ingesting aspen when feeding. Aspen however, when ingested can generally be passed through the snake quite comfortably. Aspen can also be quite dusty; it is suggested that you shake it outside to release as much dust as possible before placing into the enclosure. Although this is a very dry substrate, it can be dampened down regularly to raise humidity levels.

3) Bark chips This is more for tropical species that need to be kept slightly humid. Bark chips hold in the moisture, and are totally naturalistic. It must be kept as clean as possible, if you spot feces, you should take it out as soon as possible. There are different grades of bark chips, I suggest you go as coarse as possible, to minimize the risk of swallowing, resulting in impaction of the gut.

4) Wood chips When you use woodchips, be careful what species of tree it is from. It must NOT be cedar as when this is heated up, it releases toxic fumes. After a short while wood chips will compact, which means it will become harder for the snake to burrow. Another downside is the risk of ingesting the woodchips while swallowing a food item, this is very easy to do and can cause impaction which will seriously damage the health of your snake.

Heating & Lighting

Water Pythons require a thermal gradient, meaning they must be allowed to move around the enclosure to find their required temperature. The hot end of the enclosure should be 88-92F while the cool end should be approximately 80-84F. During the night, the temperature should drop to a more constant overall temperature of 80-84

In my opinion, the ideal way of heating a large snakes enclosure is to use a large 250W Ceramic Heater with a reflector and safety grid so the snake cannot touch it. Ceramic heaters do not give off light and therefore in a vivarium you will need a form of lighting as well. A ceramic heater should be used in conjunction with a thermostat, which will stop the power reaching the heater as soon as the temperature goes above the setting, and turn back on as soon as it is too cool.

Power Plates, spot bulbs and heat mats are also ways of heating a vivarium. These all have their advantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion, none quite weigh out to be as good as ceramic heaters for large enclosures. Heat mats are not recommended at all for large snakes. If they are used, they should not be accessible to it.

As water pythons are nocturnal, they venture out when their predators are sleeping, and their prey is awake. This is not to say though, that they never see the sun, or any form of lighting for that matter. Having artificial light in a vivarium is aesthetically pleasing to the owner, and is a good addition to a snakes enclosure. They will use this as a photo-period, and their regular time clock will generally adjust to the settings on which you have your light set to. They do not require any form of special lighting, such as a D3 Ultra-Violet light commonly used for diurnal species. An Arcadia Natural Sunlight Fluorescent Lamp is a good form of lighting. This comes in lengths of 12 up to 48 and I suggest you use the largest size able to fit inside your vivarium.

Humidity & Water

Australian Water Pythons are exposed to a high humidity for much of the year, and exposed to a far reduced humidity level during the dry season. This should be replicated in captivity to aid to the general health and well-being of your snake. If you are looking to breed your water python, doing this will greater your chances of success. An 80-90% humidity range from November through to April and 30-50% for the rest of the year will be a suitable humidity gradient.

During the wet season, water pythons really live up to their name and often become almost fully aquatic. A large water bowl where the python can fully submerge is a great additive. Many keepers choose not to provide this as they can be messy and hard to clean. Although this is not a necessity, providing a more natural habitat will always benefit the snake.

Feeding

Hatchlings should be offered fuzzy mice or rat pups, and as they grow the mice or rats should become larger. An adult water python should be fed on large rats. One or two of these every couple of weeks is ample. Hatchlings should be fed on a regular basis, every 5-7 days is ideal. Their metabolic rate is very high and as they are growing, they need a lot more food to keep them going. The only exception when adult females should be fed more is when they need fattening up for breeding, or just after they have laid eggs. A gravid female should be fed more often for several weeks after she has laid her eggs. Snakes have the capability of building up a huge fat reserve, and become obese very easily. Taking the weight off however, is a much more difficult task. Be sure not to overfeed your snake, obese snakes will not live nearly the length as a healthy snake would due to liver and kidney problems. Dinosaur Names

As with other types of organism (including all plants and animals), dinosaurs are classified using the standard biological classification system (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species). The smallest unit of this system is the "species", which represents a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring, in other words, a particular "type" of animal.

Individual species of dinosaur (just like other organisms) are named using a naming system known as "binomial nomenclature" (sometimes also known as "binary nomenclature"). In this system, individual species are identified using a two part name consisting of the genus name, and a second word identifying a species within the genus. Some examples of scientific names of dinosaur species include "Tyrannosaurus Rex", "Stegosaurus armatus" and "Allosaurus fragilis". As you may notice, in many cases, the genus names of dinosaurs (a genus may of course contain several species), such as "Stegosaurus" and "Allosaurus", are often more familiar than the names of individual species.

The exotic sounding words used in these names are usually derived from ancient Greek or Latin. So, for example "Tyrannosaurus" means "tyrant lizard", "rex" means "king", and hence "Tyrannosaurus rex" means "Tyrant lizard king". The particular words used, are chosen by the scientist who first discovers or describes the species, but their choice of name must be first approved by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature before it becomes official.

One unusual situation that may arise is if scientists chose different names for different fossils of the same animal, because they don't realize that they are in fact examples of the same animal (this is more common than you might expect - remember scientists are often working with only partial skeletons). In this case, the first chosen name usually becomes the official name.

A particularly well-known example of this type of naming conflict is "Apatosaurus" versus "Brontosaurus". Othniel C. Marsh found a juvenile animal specimen in 1877 and named it "Apatosaurus ajax". He later found another animal specimen in 1879 and named it "Brontosaurus excelsus". However it was only realized many years later (in 1903 by Elmer Riggs) that the two in fact were closely related, and arguably members of the same genus (some scientists, including Robert T. Bakker, still believe they should be classified in separated geniuses).

Bees Wax; History and Origin

We have often been asked where wax comes from? Well there are many types of Waxes. Bees wax has been around for a while. There are many mentions of beeswax in historic writing such as the myth where Icarus son of Daedalus put on wings of wax and as he flew too close to the sun, it melted and Icarus fell to his death. The father with more experience flew closer to the ground and made it to Italy. In Roman times Pliny, lived from 23 AD to 79 AD and described white bees wax which he got by boiling yellow bees wax in salt water. This was then used in broth and feed to those with dysentery, it was also used as a skin softener.

Some beeswax to this day is used in cosmetics. Virgil the great Roman Poet (well I do not think the stuff is that good) wrote of an invention by Pan, who was the guardian of the bees (an ancient bee keeper man) made a flute of reeds held together by bees wax. During the Middle Ages wooden panels covered with beeswax was noted by Homer a Greek poet. Many Romans were honored by having statues made of them selves made in bees wax and thus today we have the Movie Land Wax Museum in LA. Romans also wore Death Masks as well occasionally. The Egyptians used wax figures of deities in funeral ceremonies and placed them in graves. In 400 BC Greek Historians say that Persian coated bodies were a form of embalming. The Assyrians covered bodies with bees wax and then dipped the bodies in honey? Hey honey, who knows? In 181 BC when the Romans defeated the Corsicans and imposed a tax of 100,000 lbs of bees wax.

The Romans demanded bees wax when they conquered the city of Trebizond in the first century AD. In Medieval European times wax was a a unit of trade for taxes or other. In 1330 farmers in one region of France paid 2 lbs of bees wax per year. On 1632 records show that the French Monastery called for rent of 600 lbs. of bees wax per year. Also in 1371 a petition was presented to the London Court of Alderman in behalf of the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers, which established them as the worlds oldest English Guild. In 1483 the company received a Royal Charter with authority to oversee the craft of wax chandlery. And when faults were found to punish the offender, which included seizing the wax.

Candles of bees wax were at one time required by the Roman Catholic Church as the exclusive and only candles. The bees were brought to Puerto Rico by the church and the early priests and conquistadors. These same bees although dwarfed in comparison to the original bees are still habiting the island today. Today bees wax is sometimes used in Automobile waxes but normally it is most used in furniture wax and polishes. You can make your own wax very easily, my ancestors did on the plantation on Cape Cod. First you need a couple of pots to boil in and a pot of hot water. Liquid Beeswax furniture polish is simple, use one quarter cup of ivory soap, one quarter pound of beeswax, 1 cup of turpentine and half a cup of water. Dissolve the soap in hot water, put the shaved wax into the turpentine and then slowly melt together, then pour the soap mixture into the mix and stir with a wooden spoon, once well stirred pour it into a glass jar and you have it, very easy. Bees wax cream furniture polish which can also be used on cars with lessened amount of turpentine is made by using and mixing quarter lb of beeswax, 2 cups of turpentine, quarter cup of liquid Ivory soap, 1 cup of warm to boiling water and quarter cup of pine oil. The only difference it you have to make sure all the beeswax is dissolved first and cool then mix it into the warm soapy water until it congeals and then reheat together and dissolve. If you reduce the turpentine content you can use it on your car too. It goes on smooth and it works good. Although, I am partial to Carnauba wax for cars for its ease of use, but from a realistic standpoint of protection the carnauba only lasts three months while the beeswax melt might last slightly longer.

For solid beeswax furniture polish, which is preferred by the antique dealers we met on the back roads of NH, VT and Maine, all you do is use equal amounts of linseed oil, beeswax and turpentine. The finished product is golden brown and see through and looks rich in content. Now you have smelled lemon oil in furniture polish, which can easily be added to the boiling water during the process. There are many good waxes to use on cars that you would not put on surf boards, furniture or statues. Wax is found in the human ear also. There are two different types and your genetics dictate which one you have. Most plants have a thin protective coating of wax also. Most fruit and citrus trees and vegetables plants have wax on the fruit, leaves and vegetables they produce that we eat. Waxes are also produced by animals and also some fish. Other wax components are found in minerals and petroleum products and distillates. There are Polymer or synthetic, manufactured by man into various types of waxes. We get waxes from a variety of sources really.

The Carnauba we discussed is a preferred wax by many detailers. Carnauba wax is on the leaves of the carnauba palm trees. The best Carnauba wax comes from in my opinion the Palm Trees of Brazil. You can tell a good carnauba wax by the water beads up as you see when you detail your car. Candelilla wax comes from a plant that grows in parts of Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala and sometimes in the southwestern United States. It is a brown wax and not only have people used it on cars it is used in phonograph records, floor dressings, and candles. Although it is the major component of candle wax, it is mixed in with other waxes normally in the candles we use in our homes.

Polymer wax includes the very popular Teflon, yes a polymer brand Name used by Dupont. Polymer wax is a chain of compounds made of petroleum sources and now a days from Corn products. Polymers, which are strung together are generally applied in specific thick nesses to clear coats on cars and depending on the mixture can be quite incredible indeed. So good in fact that they are often called sealants and some last as long as a year when applied in the right mixtures and thick nesses. The word Polymer is a very vague in this regard since polymers are used to make plastics, coatings and many other products.

Generally short chains of ethlenic polymers are the type that are used by professional automotive detailers and auto detailers a like. Many in the aviation industry use it when doing specialized aircraft cleaning. We estimate that 80% of all automotive detailing and aviation aircraft cleaning commercial wax is petroleum based wax. Petroleum wax is chemically inactive in a sense and probably why it is so widely preferred. It is also cheaper to make than to harvest and has tons of uses. You cannot smell it unless cleaners are added which is often the case, but still it will not react to cause odor.

Bayberry wax, which comes from the berries the shrub with that name is also used in candle making. How is this produced? From bees, the same wax in making hives. Bees wax, is used for many things which are common to man; things such as candles, polishes, cosmetics (mostly make-up) crayons, flowers (artificial kind). Bees Wax is another wax that yes you can use it on your car and it is hard to spread and it will give off a great shine. The problem is gathers dust too quick, but it does look cool.

Wool wax from animals is also common to man. Lanolin, it is called, after purification is used in soaps in the industry, and also cosmetics as well as certain ointments for first aid and which doctor stuff. Petroleum wax can also be made hard and then we get a new type of wax. Paraffin; used in paper products (cups, paper plates), graffiti, and petroleum jelly. All Synthetic waxes are compounds of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and/or chlorine. Chemists will forever be trying to make the perfect wax for cars, boats, Aircraft to protect us from the harsh climates on the surface of this little blue planet.

And these chemists are driven by desire and need and the possibilities are endless as new compounds are adding to existing ones to bring up whole new blending ideas, some will revolutionize our industry but most will simply be duds. Some will be hyped even though they do not really solve a problem or fix a need. Never the less, the race goes on to find the best and we should be thinking about what is in that product before we put it on a customers car, boat, aircraft or prize possession. There are so many types of waxes that we know of really. From the organic waxes discussed containing carbon materials, which melt at fairly low temperatures. The chemical and biological make-up of waxes is so diverse and complex as well as consideration for grades, properties, surface uses and life spans that to really understand waxes in depth, but I hope this has cleared up some of the complex issues concerning wax, how it is made and where it comes from.

In the wild, rats live together in colonies and have a complex social structure. These social instincts carry over to pet rats. Pet rats tend to develop strong bonds with humans and with their cage mates. So much so that it is common for rats to become very depressed when a cage mate passes away.

There are many apartments that won't allow dogs or cats, and it may simply not be practical to have larger pets in some houses. In those situations a pet rat is the perfect solution. Cages for pet rats usually don't consume much room at all, usually just a two foot by two foot space, which makes pet rats great for small apartments.

How To Treat The Common Ailments Of Your Python

Many toying with the idea of owning a pet would like to know what it takes. In other words, most people feel more secure about getting a particular pet if they know at least 80% of what might go wrong and how to prevent it. I think those who want to own a pet python are no exception.

As an owner of a pet, you know top priority goes to the health of your pet. Anyway, most of the pet owners of python don't realize that common python ailments can often be detected and handled at home.

* Vomiting

One of the most common python ailments is vomiting. Do not you handle your pet python just after it has eaten; it may regurgitate. If your pet is under stress due to a feeling of insecurity or if it is infested with internal and or external parasites in its body,
it will tend to bring up its food.

To help avoid vomiting, it's a good idea to hope your pet python REST after a meal. How can you induce it to sleep? Raise the cage temperature to the recommended level for your breed. If you've also set up an ideal basking spot (hot spot), it will lie down there while its food gets digested, and will be much less likely to regurgitate.

* Constipation

If your pet does not defecate as often as it should ... or with great difficulty or if the feces are dry, in all probability your python is constipated.

Low humidity and low temperatures are the most common causes of constipation. You can avoid this by keeping sufficient clean water in the cage. In addition, keep a bowl of WARM water and encourage your python to soak in it.

* Scale Rot

If you notice any chipped or discolored - pink, red or brown - scales in the abdominal region of your python, it is probably suffering from scale rot. This disease could affect just a few scales or a single area or multiple areas.

Sometimes the cause for scale rot can be an internal infection that works its way to the outside and manifests itself as scale rot.

However the most common cause is improper cage hygiene.

If the cage is not regularly cleaned and disinfected, the python may have to bask in its urine and feces for prolonged times and develop scale rot.

A topical application of over the counter triple-antibiotic should clear up this problem. But you will have to transfer the animal to another cage while you THOROUGHLY clean and disinfect its current cage.

While the animal is being treated, do NOT allow it to soak in water. Give it water in a bowl that is just large enough for it to drink from.

Herod The Great - Ancient Mountain Military Post Found

When you receive the Seal you will believe in the biblical accounts of history. Much of the history of the Bible has been proven by archaeological digs, and a recent dig has uncovered another fortress of Herod the Great.

Herod the Great is the king infamous for killing all the male children in Bethlehem. The three wise men came from the East seeking the Christ-child. When Herod heard this child was to be born in Bethlehem, he ordered all those children slain.

Herod was a power-mad king. The historian Josephus adds many more stories of his carnage. He even killed two of his own sons since they could be heirs to his throne.

He would not tolerate anyone who might usurp his power. Not even his own children. And many other acts of cruelty like these done by Herod were recorded. You can see how he would slaughter the innocent infants of Bethlehem.

Herod the Great was born sometime close to 73 BC. His father Antipater the Idumean was poisoned and Herod had to execute his killer with the support of the Romans.

Herod was married to Doris and had a young son when he decided to marry his niece Mariamne. He exiled Doris but in a typical act of brutality he executed Mariamne along with his two sons.

The first great temple in Jerusalem was Solomon's Temple. That was destroyed when the Bablylonians came and took Jerusalem captive. Herod built the great Second Temple.

Herod was not considered a true Jewish person by the religious authorities of his day but he was always famous for building the Second Temple, or Herod's Temple.

The Second Temple was the great temple of Jerusalem in the days of Jesus. It was the temple Jesus spoke of when he said that not one stone would be found upon another, but the whole would be ruined.

And the Second Temple was destroyed in 70 AD. It happened when the Jewish people came to strife with the Romans during the Great Jewish Revolt. But when the temple was destroyed the revolt also ended.

A recent archaeological dig has uncovered another great fortress built by Herod, this one high in the mountains in the East Jordan. The architecture is similar to that of the Alexandreion built by Herod in the West Jordan.

So this new building is believed to be built by Herod. Herod reigned over the West Jordan. But this new building shows that he also established his presence in the East Jordan.

He would have been able to control the traffic in the Middle Jordan Valley and that was how he could control the ways to get to and from the East Jordan from the West.

The building was a military outpost, a "casemate" which means it had walls fortified through which weapons could be fired. It was a strategic position establishing the presence of Herod in the East, in the outer reaches of his kingdom.

When you are sealed you will begin to see new wonders of the Bible. Some of these new wonders are yet to be confirmed in digs under the earth. These are treasures proving the history as far as it can be proven from remaining evidence.

When you are sealed God plants a little garden in you. So as that garden you are just like a little earth, and inside you are hidden all the treasures found in the pages of the Bible. You can begin to dig up those treasures when you receive the Seal.

So you are a parent and would like your kids to get better at science. What do you do? Buy them more and more books on science. Get them science kits, chemistry sets, do it yourself experiments, models that they can build?

The answers are tough to find. But since we are in the age of the Internet, there are sites that offer solutions for exactly this need of parents. Before we start looking at the specific benefits that these sites offer, let us go ahead and figure out what such sites should contain.

1) They should be appealing: All of us are driven by appearances. But our fickle-minded, short attention spanned children all the more so. That is why the overall appearance and visual layout of the site should be appealing and engaging for children. Luckily for us, the Internet as a medium is visual. Hence, it is not too tough for sites to be visually appealing.

2) Sites that are easy to use: One thing that really bugs me is that some sites require you to have a high degree of familiarity with the site to be able to make it work. In fact this can get to be so bad that even if a visitor has come to a site earlier, they are unable to find the relevant page on their subsequent visit. The basic idea that I am talking about is that the site should have good navigation. Regardless of where you are on the site, you should be able to get to another point without too much of a headache.

3) Sites that develop the right attitude in kids: As any teacher will attest, it is not about the information that a site transmits. It is a little bit of the clarity of communication. But it is mainly about the attitude that one develops in the minds of students. Promoting the right attitude can be done in many different ways. One of them could be to simplify concepts. Another could be to present scientific facts in a way that are interesting to kids.

4) Sites that are interesting: By its very nature science is really interesting. So the site should leverage on this factor. I really hate sites that make science seem much tougher than it really is. And the big crime is when a site presents science as something that is boring, or something that needs to be memorized. And ultimate bad science site is one where the site solely focuses on diagrams, theorems, definitions, jargon, and formulae. That is the stuff that puts off people.

5) Sites that are interesting: I know that I am repeating this heading. But that is for a purpose. I rate this quality of a site as the most important quality in a science for kid's kind of site. There is treasure all around us. There is magic and wonderment in science. There is a sense of discovery and adventure. And when things go right, there is a sense of achievement if not miracle. All of these need to be nurtured in a child.

Having established what makes a good science site for children, you as the parent-user need to think about the best method to make it work for your kids. Here are some thoughts on that:

a) Make sure that you are hand holding the process at least a bit. This means that there are going to be situations where a child might need to turn for help. Online help can take you some distance. But a grown up, a parent or minor, can be much better at helping out a child.

b) Be around to inquire. Often a child can lose interest in the process. If the parent inquires about the learning process, the child can get motivated to make an exhibition of their learning. This will inspire them to study further.

c) Encourage and reward the little ones I am not a big fan of giving rewards and incentives to children for every little thing. Sometimes the success or achievement itself should be the reward. In keeping with that sentiment, I think that you should encourage children by telling them how proud you are of what they have achieved.

When you find the right site and approach the mentoring process in the right way, you can find your children getting really good at science. This is not something to be taken lightly. I am convinced that science is not just about information and knowledge and concepts. It is also about developing a scientific temperament. And that is a gift you can give your children. They will find it invaluable for the rest of their lives.

Of course, as with other aspects of parenting, you need to ensure that you are not getting unduly hung up on minor matters. After all kids are kids and need to be given a lot of latitude when they so desire. As an experienced parent you already knew that, right?

This story takes ideas that would normally seem impossible and outstanding and ushers it into the realm of the possible.

A federal republic in southern Asia, forming a sub continent in the South of the Himalayan Mountains, with the Arabian sea to the west and the bay of Bengal. To the west is India Madaya Pradesh. A prime territory area where the meadow has a constant supply of freshly chilled clear water.

Over the years, it was known to be the habitat in territories of the Tigers. The tribe called the Mohawks lived in the centre of the park known as Karma meaning Fate and destiny. Their village was in the heart of prime predators habitat.

They keep a close count on tigers. They respected and honoured this wild beautiful animal. The Mohawks had great beliefs in the Modjadji Queen who ruled in the 1930 It was said the queen was immortal and possesses great powers.

One early evening the tribe left the village for hunting. They wander far and deep into the forest and will not return to the village until each operate hunts and catch prey.

They heard the alarm of the monkeys, which gave the warning that a predator is in the prowl. When the wild monkeys call out in that manner the reason is that a prowler is close and is the dangerous predator of all.

Predators capture the moment where life is uncertain, the split second that the human eye would never normally see. The drama of a gripping battle of wits that decides which animal get a meal or which escape becoming one.

The tribe were nearby and followed the track of the roaring sound.

Bearskin the chief of the Mohawks went forward to pick up the child and wrapped her in the coat of skin. He named the child Sundilli meaning Beautiful girl.

The summer rain was late that year. The water in the dam fell low and predators were coming down to drink. The wind Exhausted and the predators lie in wait.

The hills on either side were roaring with the calls of the predators. The river went on for miles; the pines grew through glacier smooth ground.

The years passed by and Sundilli was turning into the beauty of the perfect image of the goddess. She learned how to hunt and spear prey. She ventured out on her own many times, especially at night. She climb trees like a monkey and sits there on the slightly bend trunk gazing at the moon, and at the far distance, the beautiful mountains and the forest. Sundilli was as wild as a tiger and lead the tribe as a true ruler was.

She lived the life of the tiger that is the largest and the heaviest of the cat family, and very much feared by animals and humans alike.

She has a classic orange and white striped coat. She patrols her own territory and usually hunts alone, stalking its prey and killing it by ambush. She is immensely strong and can bring down animals much larger than herself

The tiger relies on stealth to catch its prey. It has excellent eyesight and hearing which helps track animals such as deer, wild pigs, buffalo and other animals of the jungle, which provides food for days.

Tigers slink up slowly, tightly and gentle on their prey. Unseen, it charges only when it is within twenty metres of the prey. It kills its prey by biting into the back of its neck or throat. It drags the carcase away and conceals it with leaves so they are able to return to it. Male tigers can eat up to 40kh of meat in one day, they are able to find their females by their roars and scent marks.

A pair of tigers may mate to a hundred times over in two days.

He roams a territory of up to a hundred square metres depending on its boundaries with metres with scent markings, droppings and scratch marks on boulders or on trees. These signals tell other tigers about its sex and the size of its territory.

They endangered species of about 2.8metres maximum length. The tail alone is around one mete long and weighs up to 220 kilograms .

Sundilli and Lucchme grew up and close to each other and often roamed around together as Lucchme defends its territory fiercely against other rivals, especially the male tiger that tends to attack the young tigers for prey.

With a life-span of 4-6 years, Hedgehogs are relatively easy to care for and are easy to feed with high quality cat food. When they feel threatened these animals will roll into a ball, poking out the prickly spines on their back. These spines are not a big danger, but getting a hedgehog used to human handling is one of the biggest steps in making them comfortable and you avoiding getting poked. A seemingly quiet animal, they don't require a lot of attention and are great at entertaining themselves.

4) Chinchillas- Pets don't get much softer or cuddlier than one of these very soft, furrycreatures. Like most exotic mammals on this list, if handled from a young age Chinchillas bond very closely with their human owners. For a smaller animal they have quite the extensive life span, lasting about 15 years. Lectures on the History of Physics

1. Introduction

As a start, I would like to point out to you a few things which might explain my interest in history and philosophy in general. You have all heard the slogan Two Cultures, the contrast and conflict between sciences on one hand and art on the other. However, in Hungary, where I come from, there was only One Culture. The Hungarian word for science is tudomny. It corresponds to the word Wissenschaft in German. These expressions designate one, all-embracing science, including everything from mathematics to music. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences has, at present, eight sections: languages, literary sciences, social and historical sciences, mathematics and physics, agricultural sciences, technical sciences, chemistry and biology, and a section on musical folklore under the well-know composer Zoltn Kodly, who recently visited this country and taught in a music summer school at Dartmouth College. Incidentally, we have also in our country at least one institution, the American Academy of Arts and Science, which emphasizes the union, rather than the contrast, between Arts and Science. However, as you know, this is an exception. Our National Academy of Science is concerned only with science, but not with the arts.

My interest in philosophy of science was kindled by Poincars books. It was reinforced by the requirement for the Ph.D. degree in Vienna, which included philosophy. My finals consiswted of two one-hour exams in physics, which was my major, a single one-hour exam in mathematics, my minor, and two one-hour exams in philosophy. These requirements forced one to study philosophy and to consider science in general, physical and mathematics in particular, in a more general context.

I managed somehow to take both one-hour exams in philosophy of science, since I had a sort of allergy to some parts of traditional philosophy. Fortunately, a friend of mine, Herbert Feigl, who is now a distinguished philosopher of science himself (Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Minnesota) tutored me. This way I did not have to read voluminous books on traditional philosophy.

One of the philosophers who examined me was M. Schlick. He was the founder of the Vienna Circle of logical positivists, also called logical empiricists. This direction goes back to Hume, Comte, and Mach. The circle had weekly sessions on philosophy of science, which were very interesting, but sometimes quite baffling, to me then. For example, there was a discussion about a book by Herman Weyl, Was ist Materie (What is Matter). There was an expression es gibt (there is). I remember a spirited discussion about the possible meaning of that expression. Being a young student of science, I did not at that time appreciate the significance of such semantic discussions. Later on, I realized that the precise meaning of statements in philosophy can be very important. Still, I always remembered a saying by Goethe in Faust: Wo die Begriffe fehlen, stellt ein Wort zur rechten Zeit sich ein (When the concepts are missing, a word shows up). Clearly, a new word is no substitute for a new concept!

2. History of General History

After this bit of autobiographical introduction, I would like to discuss very briefly and in big historical jumps the History of History and the History of History of Science.

History may be defined as a methodical reconstruction of the past of mankind. From Herodotos to Thucydides, from Livius to Tacitus, there was a gradually increasing sophistication leading away from the naive, purely narrative type of history. However, even with some sophistication, history was only an uncritical description of separated human events (like battles) and actions (by kings or other leaders).

General history, taking account of the dynamic forces emanating from the structure of a society, started only in the eighteenth century and actually developed only in the nineteenth century. Voltaires Sicle de Louis XIV was, perhaps , the earliest general or cultural history. Gibbon, at least in some parts of his work, was another early bird. Sismondi, Thierry, and Michelet emphasized the role of communes and the rise of the Third Estate in medieval history. The British Whig historians, Hallam, Grote, and Macauley considered history as a successive unfolding of political liberty. Carlyle vainly tried to turn the clock back with his hero worship, as exemplified in his History of the French Revolution.

Influenced by the philosophers, Comte and Spencer, Taine and Buckle were, perhaps, the first cultural historians. They emphasize social factors, ideas, and idealogies. Hegel and Marx catalyzed the dialectic materialism style of history, with all its excesses. However, they rightly emphasized that in an age of quickly changing social and industrial development in particular, and even more generally, the sociological and industrial factors played very important roles in all human endeavors. Lecky, following Buckle, emphasized (in his History of the Rise and Influence of Rationalism in Europe and in his History of European Morals from Augustus to Charlemagne) the practical, active, and social sides of history, in contrast to the intellectual and speculative side, as exemplified by Leslie Stephens English Thought in the Eighteenth Century. Of course, all these aspects of history are complementary and should enter together into a really general history.

Grand synthesis in history cannot be practiced without analytic specialization. As a matter of fact, analytic specialization is a pre-condition for a successful cultural synthesis. The great attention to innumerable details, documented by a large number of footnotes, was the style set by Ranke and, perhaps to a lesser extent, also by Mommsen, who for his monumental History of the Roman Empire received the literary Nobel prize. Detailed treatments of shorter epochs on history have been previously pioneered by Voltaire and Gibbon and developed by Macauley (famous third chapter of History of England), Taine (Ancien Regime), de Coulange (La Cit Antique), Dill (Roman Society from Nero to Marcus Aurelius), although these cannot compete with Ranke in the number of footnotes!

Of course, a detailed study of any aspects in history is justified only if it can be used in the grand synthesis. Details which cannot be woven into the canvas of general history are clearly not significant. In other words, the details of any specialized historical study must be embeddable in the whole picture one attempts to paint, like apiece of mosaic is embeddable in the whole.

This principle of embedding is valid for any human endeavor and activity. Any human activity is the more important the more it interacts with and is related to other human activities. The abstract form of this principle goes back, perhaps, to Protagoras of Abdera, one of the first relativists. More concretely and recently, it has been applied by Felix Klein, David Hilbert, and John von Neumann to a relative valuation of different branches of mathematics and very recently by Alvin M. Weinberg to a relative valuation of different sciences.

The grand synthesis can be characterized also, again as all human endeavor, and more generally as all the nature around us, as a result of an evolution. This view is, of course, only valid if one averages over a longer time period. Over a short period, evolution looks more like the envelope or average of revolutions.

Eugene Guth made pioneering contributions to Polymer Physics and significant contributions to Nuclear and Solid State Physics. At the age of 23, he wrote the first comprehensive history of quantum theory in a 170-page Handbuch der Physik (Vol. IV) article, which was highly praised by Niels Bohr and Wolfgang Pauli. Dr. Guth is one of the chief founders and developers of Polymer Physics and Polymer Physical Chemistry, both theoretically and experimentally. For this work and for basic contributions to rheology, he received the 1965 Bingham Medal, the Society of Rheology's highest award.
